The writing on the wall is clear: Rolando McClain is on the roster to keep the seat warm for future starter Jaylon Smith.

But the Cowboys should be cautious here. Smith’s knee is still in the process of healing. The road to recovery is still a long one. And to void McClain’s talents is a grave mistake; he could still contribute even with a healthy Smith on the carpet.

While McClain is penciled in as the starter for 2016, I’m putting him on the list because his work ethic has not lived up to his potential talents. If he is this talented in games without a full offseason work load, imagine him with a full camp under his belt.

He has showed signs of remarkable ability and smarts as the starting middle linebacker in the past. You have to wonder if he put in the dedication, hours, and practice towards his craft, how much better of a player he could become.

McClain’s conditioning and dedication to the Cowboys will always be a question. And because of that, his role as the future starter is in jeopardy.
