Poll Says 38% Of Dallas Cowboys Fans Will Find A New Team
When the Dallas Cowboys signed controversial free agent defensive end Greg Hardy to the team last week, the organization obviously expected some public backlash. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones even produced a press release to help manage the public relations nightmare of acquiring the 26-year old Hardy, who was convicted of assaulting and threatening to kill his girlfriend last year.
According to one Dallas-based source, the Cowboys may have already lost a large chunk of their fan base over the signing. To the tune of a whopping 38 percent! The poll was run on DMagazine’s blog titled Front Burner. The article was published earlier this week and the results were fascinating.
38% of voters claimed the team lost them with the Hardy signing and they’d be picking another team to root for. 31% said they would continue to support the Cowboys, as they see the signing as a way to improve the team. 13% said they would still root for the team, just not for Hardy individually. And the rest had no interest in the Cowboys or the sport altogether.

The poll is now closed and it’s unknown exactly how many voters participated. But DMagazine currently has nearly 100,000 followers on Twitter and 87,000 likes on Facebook.
Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings and local sportscaster Dale Hansen are leading the public outcry against the Dallas Cowboys for signing Hardy. But Cowboys’ executive vice president Charlotte Jones Anderson defended the move telling the Dallas Morning News on Sunday:
"“We don’t believe in throwing people away. The experts have told us it is far better to provide a way out, coupled with educational and rehabilitative services and therapy. That does more to protect the victim and prevent future violence than a zero tolerance policy. We have to trust the advice of the experts…I embrace that.”"
Not only is Jones-Anderson the daughter of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, but she is also the first woman ever to chair The Salvation Army’s National Advisory Board.
Jones-Anderson was also named to the NFL’s conduct committee in December. The committee was formed to review the NFL’s new conduct policy at least once a year and recommend appropriate changes with advice from outside experts. This includes how the league deals with the issue of domestic violence. Jones is one of only two women on the nine-member conduct committee.
Going back to the topic of the poll question, I know a majority of our readers are die-hard Dallas Cowboys fans. So I’m assuming that Dallas’ signing of Greg Hardy is probably not enough to discourage your loyalty.
But, is there anything the Cowboys could do as an organization that could make you root for another team?
