The NFL Draft was full of excitement. However, now is the time for reflection. Especially in the NFC East. This years installment of the draft was set in Philadelphia and every NFC East team was booed at the podium. But none more loudly than the Dallas Cowboys.

The Philadelphia Eagles/Cowboys rivalry has reached a fever pitch and things should come to a head when both teams meet later in the 2017 regular season. But which team had the best draft haul? Which prospects will get their respective teams closer to an NFL title?

Dallas Cowboys

1 (28) Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan
2 (60) Chidobe Awuzie, CB, Colorado
3 (92) Jourdan Lewis, CB, Michigan
4 (133) Ryan Switzer, WR, North Carolina
6 (191) Xavier Woods, S, Louisiana Tech
7 (216) Marquez White, CB, FSU
7 (228) Joey Ivie, DT, Florida
7 (239) Noah Brown, WR, Ohio State
7 (246) Jordan Carrell, DT, Colorado

The Cowboys were the only team to draft strictly for need and grab the best player available. There have been converging thoughts among fans who say why not grab a top rated cornerback in the first round?

To that I say why take a corner in round one when you can have the same caliber player in rounds 2 and 3. That was a lucky break for Dallas as they checked off three of their key needs right off the bat.

They improve their pass rush, and secondary all in the correct order and that is a big deal. Taco Charlton was the best edge rusher available at the end of round 1 and is a lot better and more promising for this defensive line than the players they could have landed in rounds 2 and three.

The real reason the Cowboys win the draft for the NFC East is because of the quality of player they acquired. The value of Ryan Switzer and Xavier Woods in the fourth and sixth rounds is astonishing and they both fit key needs.

Chidobe “Chido” Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis could become instant starters for this team and were some of the best cornerbacks available period. I would have liked to see the Cowboys land wide receiver, Dede Westbrook or pass rusher Carl Lawson when he fell passed the third round but all in all a very good haul for this football team.
