The Dallas Cowboys have reconfigured the team’s compass through the NFL Draft.

After seeing most of the secondary walk during the free agency period, the Cowboys were desperate for help. In addition to the secondary, the ‘Boys were already suspect with their defensive front.

The Cowboys found solutions in this year’s draft.

Though it will take a few years to judge this year’s group of rookies, that doesn’t mean we can’t discuss some of the big surprises.

Here are 10 things that surprised me in the 2017 NFL Draft. Enjoy the list.

1. Rod Marinelli strikes back

Once upon a time, the Dallas Cowboys picked flash over substance. Those days, however, are long gone.

In the past, though, the team didn’t mind cherry picking a player or two they liked over what they needed.

This year’s draft felt completely different. Big D came into the draft defensive minded.

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli felt the love. Seven of the nine picks went to the defense. There are reasons for him to fist pump.

Of the seven defensive picks, four of them are expected to make day one impact. Names like Taco Charlton (DE), Chidobe Awuzie (CB), Jourdan Lewis (CB) and Xavier Woods (S) will make the Dallas brass proud, especially in 2017.

Looks like Rod got a hug.
