The Dallas Cowboys have a huge decision to make with that 4th overall pick, but Tony Romo’s successor at quarterback may not be a first rounder.

The debate between Dallas Cowboys fans at present seems dominated between Carson Wentz or Jared Goff; Joey Bosa or Jalen Ramsey. The Cowboys have a huge decision to make with that 4th overall pick but there are quarterbacks available later on. Tony Romo‘s successor may not be a first rounder.

Look at those currently backing up the elder statesmen in the NFL. Despite handing Tom Brady a contract extension in recent days, the Patriots are very much focused on their 2nd round pick of 2014 Jimmy Garoppolo eventually succeeding him Brady.

Should Peyton Manning retire this year, Brock Osweiler will step into his shoes permanently, he too was a second round pick. A.J. McCarron surprised many when he deputized for Andy Dalton at the Bengals this season and he wasn’t drafted until the fifth round of the 2014 draft.

The 2016 draft class isn’t loaded with quarterback talent of previous years. Unless the Tennessee Titans trade back from the top spot it’s unlikely you’ll see a quarterback go off the board with the first pick. While few argue over the potential of Carson Wentz and Jared Goff as first rounders, they’re not capable of being the instant NFL starters that 2015 brought in Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota.

So with the uncertainty, the Cowboys ought to use their pick on an immediate starter- upgrade their defense be it pass rush or secondary. Then as we head to the middle rounds, consider a quarterback by the name of Dak Prescott.

Dak Prescott was the three year starter at Mississippi State and heads for the NFL as the most decorated player in the schools history. You can see the list of his incredible achievements over on the Bulldog’s website.

In 49 games, Dak passed for 9,376 yards, threw 70 touchdowns and had 23 interceptions. In 2015, he ranked top in the SEC for pass completions and in 2014 topped the SEC tables with 41 total touchdowns, 4,435 total yards and 477 pass attempts.

While Tim Tebow‘s NFL career won’t take him to the hall of fame, there’s no doubting he’s one of the finest players at college level so for Dan Mullen his former coach to state that Dak Prescott is in fact the best player he’s coached is certainly something.

"“I’d say he might be the best player I’ve ever coached. If you look at my coaching resume, that’s pretty impressive” – Dan Mullen, Mississippi State head coach"

Both CBS Sports and ESPN have Prescott graded as a 3rd to 4th rounder. Wentz, Goff, Paxton Lynch, Connor Cook and in most cases Christian Hackenberg all rank ahead of Prescott. But in terms of potential it’s hard to overlook him.
