If there’s one thing Jerry Jones and the Cowboys' front office can always be counted on, it’s trusting their pre-draft evaluations. One of the biggest offseason themes has been Dallas taking fliers on former first-round picks.

Well, Jones and company can knock out two birds with one stone in that regard after the Titans waived-injured wide receiver Treylon Burks, who fractured his collarbone over the weekend.

The Cowboys were extremely high on Burks during the 2022 draft process. Thankfully, Tennessee took the decision out of Jones' hands when they nabbed Burks at No. 18 overall. That laid the groundwork for Dallas to select Tyler Smith with the No. 24 overall pick.

Cowboys' Jerry Jones cannot take the Treylon Burks bait after Titans release

A split between Burks and the Titans had been brewing. The Arkansas product has played just 27 of a possible 51 regular-season games in three seasons. If you can believe it, Tennessee is on its second general manager since Jon Robinson, who drafted Burks.

Burks faced an uphill climb to make the 53-man roster to begin with. The fractured collarbone was the last straw in the Titans' book. He caught 33 passes for 444 yards and a touchdown as a rookie, but has managed just 38 catches for 255 yards and zero scores over the last two seasons.

While Burks made sense as a dart throw for Dallas as recently as 2024, the wide receiver room is in a much better place now. CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are a top-five duo. Jalen Tolbert is a solid WR3 and faces competition from Jonathan Mingo, who has enjoyed a bright start to camp.

The Cowboys also have healthy competition at the bottom of the depth chart between Jalen Brooks, Ryan Flournoy, Traeshon Holden, Jalen Cropper and Parris Campbell once he returns from a sprained MCL suffered over the weekend. Not to mention, KaVontae Turpin is headed for an increased role on offense.

While Burks will come cheap, there isn't a spot for him on the roster. He was a 30 visit with Dallas before the 2022 draft, but he hasn't amounted to anything in the NFL and is dealing with another serious injury.
