Von Miller had a Cowboys Super Bowl on his mind weeks before he came to Dallas

Von believes. Do you?

Von Miller grew up in DeSoto, Texas, less than an hour’s drive from the Dallas Cowboys’ facility. The Cowboys were the most dominant team in the NFL during his childhood, winning three Super Bowls by the time he was six years old. Miller has described dreaming about playing for the Cowboys when he was young.

The veteran defender went on to win two Super Bowls of his own. He has solidified himself as a future member of the Hall of Fame, already in the top ten in sacks in league history. Now, at 37 years old, the football legend is fulfilling his childhood dream of playing for his hometown team.

Miller’s return is about much more than a homecoming, though. He truly believes that this team can win a Super Bowl. He told Dak Prescott as much weeks before he got a call from the Cowboys. The two veterans ran into each other in Las Vegas during the offseason and discussed the state of the team, per Nick Harris of the Star Telegram.

"We just started gambling together and talking. And I'm like, ‘Hey man, it’s about time, Dak. It's about time. You got to break through with one of these teams," Miller said. "You got to break through one of these years. I think this is the year you'll be able to do it. You got everybody to do it.’

And I didn't have any inkling on being a Dallas Cowboy. It just happened naturally. And then the Cowboys reached out and I was just like, ‘Bro, this is a sign. This is a sign for me.’”

Von Miller has his sights set on a championship after signing with the Cowboys

Miller has bounced around the NFL in recent years.

Since being traded away from the Denver Broncos in 2021, he has played for the Los Angeles Rams, the Buffalo Bills, and the Washington Commanders, respectively. Many veterans spend the latter years of their careers looking for paychecks.

That’s not what Miller is doing. At each stop, he has believed that he could win a championship. And he's not wrong to believe the same in Dallas.

The Cowboys finished second in the league in offensive yards per game, second in passing yards, and third in scoring offense. They spent the offseason upgrading all three levels of the defense through both free agency and the draft. Entering the season, Brian Schottenheimer’s team is without a glaring weakness.

Miller can be the final piece of the puzzle. While he may not be the game-wrecking force that he was earlier in his career, the veteran still produced nine sacks last season. He can be a “closer,” rotating in for clear passing downs to put an end to opponents’ drives.

This Cowboys team is as talented and well-coached as it has been in recent history. It has fans truly buying into a Super Bowl run. As Miller told Prescott in Las Vegas, it’s about time.
