The Dallas Cowboys were yet another team that decided to acquire quarterback Trey Lance with the goal of taking his strong arm and raw athletic ability and turning him into a player who sticks around. Instead, Lance failed to take advantage of the opportunity he was given.
After injuries and the rise of Brock Purdy brought an immediate end to his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas thought they had the ingredients to get the most out of him. It took until Dallas was eliminated from the playoffs in the last game of the 2024 season for Lance to ever get in a meaningful game.
Lance has not garnered a ton of NFL interest after barely getting on the field throughout the duration of his rookie contract. He may need to cross a border to find a team willing to give him a shot to be a starter.
The CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders have added Lance to their exclusive negotiating list. If he does want to play in Canada, the Roughriders now have the exclusive rights to work out a contract. Keep in mind, this man was drafted No. 3 overall in the NFL Draft five years ago.

Lance was acquired with the thought he could be a high-end backup for Dak Prescott, but the fact he was unable to ever beat out Cooper Rush and looked substandard when he did get on the field is not a good look. Lance was given moments to shine, but he rarely did anything with them.
Lance famously threw five interceptions in one preseason game during the last of his two seasons with Dallas. Lance started just one game, a meaningless Week 18 duel against the Commanders, and he failed to throw a touchdown pass. In fact, Lance hasn't thrown an NFL touchdown since 2021.
While the former North Dakota State star was essentially drafted after one FCS season, and the whole idea of picking him that high was that he was a raw bundle of traits who needed to play in order to work out the kinks, one would hope that he flashed enough in four years to warrant more interest.
Lance may have been set up to fail due to his injuries and the odd situation he was stuck in with Dallas. However, as this CFL interest confirms, Lance wasn't doing enough on his own accord to stick around in the pros.
