The Dallas Cowboys hired Matt Eberflus as their defensive coordinator in the 2025 offseason and to say that it's not going well in the Cowboys' first three games of the season would be an understatement. While Eberflus' unit looked decent in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, it's been tough sledding the past two weeks.
In Week 2 against the Giants, the Cowboys defense was basically invisible, allowing a bad Giants team to tally over 500 yards of total offense. It's not going much better for Eberflus' crew in Week 3, as the Chicago Bears had no problem taking a double-digit lead on Dallas while ripping off chunk play after chunk play.
This is the same Bears offense that has been largely disappointing to start the year and their offense looks elite against the Cowboys. Tom Brady, who was on the call for the game on FOX, took the exact words out of Cowboys fans' mouths when discussing Eberflus and his defense.
Tom Brady perfectly captured Cowboys fans’ feelings on Matt Eberflus
"There’s not enough guys in the rush, and certainly no coverage. Another wide open receiver. Matt Eberflus is just looking for answers over there. Not rushing well, not covering well, not knowing their way on defense.”
Well put, Tom. The Cowboys defense truly doesn't do anything well and he encapsulated that here with his comments.
The Bears clearly didn't respect Eberflus, opting to go for it on 4th-and-goal from the Dallas 4-yard line when they were already up by 10 points and could have made it a 13-point game by kicking the field goal. Chicago was wise to go for it there, however, as Caleb Williams threw a touchdown pass to a wide open D.J. Moore to make it a 17-point game.
Eberflus had been the head coach of the Bears for three years so it's not surprising to see his old team rub salt in the wound there. For Cowboys fans though, it was nothing but pain. It's still early in the season but there's been very little to give fans hope that Eberflus will be able to turn this defense around.
He's public enemy No. 1 in DFW until further notice.
