Watch DeMarvion Overshown show off awesome hidden talent at Cowboys rookie premiere
By Jerry Trotta
The Dallas Cowboys took an unexpected approach to the 2023 NFL Draft.
While they ended up addressing every position of need, the order in which they did so was unpredictable, like drafting Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown in the third round and waiting until the fifth to select an offensive linemen.
The Cowboys fulfilled Overshown's childhood dream of playing for America's Team. He actually predicted in third grade that he'd one day get drafted by Dallas.
A former safety convert, Overshown is undersized for a standard linebacker at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, but he's an explosive athlete coming downhill who can range sideline-to-sideline tracking ball-carriers and defend multiple positions in coverage.
Though football is his calling card, Overshown has many other skills in his locker. At the Bank of America Rookie Premiere last month, he was asked what talent he would feel confident in challenging one of Dallas' other draft picks.
What happened next was nothing shy of awesome.
Cowboys rookie DeMarvion Overshown showcases singing talent
Who would've thought, right? Mazi Smith didn't even know how to react.
You have to give Overshown credit for having the guts to sing in front of his new coaches and teammates and coaches. That would be difficult for some (maybe most) rookies. Not for Overshown, though, who delivered another pleasant surprise by handpicking popular Josh Turner single "Your Man."
Turns out the former Longhorn has excellent taste in music. Even more impressive was that Overshown's rendition hit the mark, even without the support of music in the background. He made his own beat and even got the audience clapping in rhythm with it.
While Overshown's singing talent will make for great locker room discourse, he wasn't drafted to be groomed for American Idol.
The Tyler, TX native brings needed depth and versatility to a linebacker room that features two players with notable injury histories in Leighton Vander Esch and Damone Clark. Even Jabril Cox tore his ACL two years ago.
Overshown figures to fill many hats in Dan Quinn's defense and it'll be interesting to see what roles he's given at training camp.
In his final season at Texas, Overshown accounted for 96 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, four sacks and five passes defended. If the 22 year old shows a semblance of the confidence and courage on the football field that he did at the Rookie Premiere, he'll be just fine.
