That’s exactly what happened when news broke that the Dallas Cowboys had traded for Trey Lance, likely with the intention of having him backup Dak Prescott this season. It was a trade that ended an unfortunate situation for the former No. 3 overall pick, as Lance had fallen to QB3 on the San Francisco 49ers depth chart behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold.

It was an embarassing fall from grace for Lance — although that’s suggesting he had a place to fall from with the Niners. If anyone is at fault for what happened to Lance, it’s Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch.

The Niners brain trust traded here first round picks to move up to No. 3 and draft Lance back in 2021, a deal that now ranks among the absolute worst in NFL history. While the Niners took Lance, the Miami Dolphins used the picks to either draft or trade for Jaylen Waddle, Tyreek Hill, and Bradley Chubb.

Jerry Jones had to have been proud.

He was certainly keeping an eye on things, and flipped a fourth round pick to land Lance and end the whole debacle.

Most of the takes centered on Lance’s saga in San Francisco coming to a merciful end, but others took shots at Dak Prescott over what is being perceived as pressure being put on him after the trade.

Cooper Rush has now likely been bumped back to QB3, especially since the public justification for the trade from the Cowboys was how this reinforces the situation behind Dak. That could mean Lance is still QB3 but just in a new place, but it makes the Cowboys final roster cuts even more interesting than they already were.
