Dak Prescott has been on an absolute heater since training camp started. Prescott has yet to throw an interception and looks to be in mid-season form without his top receiver CeeDee Lamb. While Prescott is scalding hot, Dallas Cowboys fans have waited in earnest for Trey Lance to catch fire.

After not playing a snap last season while he learned Mike McCarthy's playbook, some rust from Lance was to be expected. As a former third overall pick who dominated the Missouri Valley Conference in college, though, Lance should at the very least look like a competent quarterback in camp.

For the first week, Lance hardly resembled a backup. For every off-schedule throw he made after eluding pressure, he deferred to his check down instead of looking downfield or threw an errant pass that got picked off.

Over the last few practices, it seems that Lance has flipped a switch. One throw in particular had Cowboys fans buzzing on social media. Given a clean pocket in team drills, the 23-year-old threw an absolute dime to Jalen Tolbert some 30 yards up the sideline.

Cowboys QB Trey Lance is finally delivering the goods in training camp

That is a thing of beauty. Rookie cornerback Caelen Carson was in position to make a play, but Lance's placement was perfect. He put the ball only where Tolbert could catch it over his back shoulder and he hit the receiver in stride to boot.

Another notable takeaway is that Lance used the sideline to his benefit; almost as a shield. A few days earlier, Lance left an almost identical pass inside and Carson picked it off. Lance gave this throw more air and angled it toward the sideline to give Carson no chance.

The fact Lance learned from that mistake to deliver arguably the best throw in camp from any Cowboys QB is very encouraging. However, that isn't the only highlight Lance has turned in over the last few practices.

The former No. 3 overall pick had another jaw-dropping deep ball up the sideline. This time, he fitted it between two Cowboys defenders. He hit the receiver in the hands, but the pass was dropped.

A few days later, Lance hit fullback Hunter Luepke for a deep gain. Lance made the cardinal sin of throwing across his body on the run, but he spotted Luepke in single coverage and smartly left the pass short to make it difficult for the defender to adjust in time.

Maybe Lance did have to shake off some rust after all. Very quietly, he has started to stack impressive practices in Oxnard. With the first preseason game just days away, Lance is hitting his stride at the perfect time.
