One reason why Jerry Jones will sign Dak Prescott that nobody is talking about

The Dallas Cowboys mercifully ended CeeDee Lamb's holdout with less than two weeks two spare before their season-opener in Cleveland on Sunday. While Lamb's extension is a massive win for Dallas, celebrations were short-lived as the focus quickly pivoted to Dak Prescott's future.

Something tell us Lamb wouldn't commit to the Cowboys until 2029 if he didn't have a good idea of who'd be getting him the ball.

Despite having active talks with Prescott for the last month, though, negotiations have gone down to the wire. It's an all-too familiar situation for Prescott, who's in a contract year for the third time in the last six years. It's unprecedented territory for most franchise quarterbacks.

Jerry Jones claims to be committed to Prescott, but that hasn't stopped him from devaluing the Pro Bowl quarterback to the media. Like countless Cowboys fans, Prescott has stopped listening to the things Jones says to the media a long time ago.

He talks a big game, but there are myriad reasons for him to pay Prescott. One reason isn't getting nearly enough attention, however.

There's one obvious reason why Cowboys' Jerry Jones will pay Dak Prescott

If there is one thing Jones loves, it is controlling the narrative. He's admitted to "doing his job" as long as people are talking about the Cowboys. Well, what would get the people talking more than signing Prescott to a record-breaking extension on the eve of the NFL season?

The first game is Thursday night. Would it not be typical of Jones to sign Prescott hours before kickoff, if not closer? Stealing the spotlight is Jones' M.O.

News of Mike Zimmer taking Dallas' defensive coordinator job broke just before the NFL Honors got underway. Similarly, the Cowboys signed Ezekiel Elliott right after the draft in April. The move undoubtedly took some shine away from the draft's top storylines. The list goes on.

There are obviously more urgent reasons why Jones should sign Prescott than controlling the narrative. He is an elite quarterback -- arguably the franchise's best in the last 30 years -- and should be paid as such. Further, there's no obvious succession plan (Trey Lance is not the answer) and Dak has elite chemistry with Lamb, who's a top-three asset to the team.

But this is Jerry Jones we're talking about. Drama has followed the Cowboys throughout Jones' tenure. There's a reason numerous fans and analysts believe he cares more about the bottom line than winning.

Signing Prescott will obviously help the winning side of things, but you haven't been paying attention if you don't think Jones will try in earnest to knock out two birds with one stone.
