NFL analyst floats Cowboys backup QB target who is even worse than Trey Lance

If you looked at Trey Lance's box score after the Dallas Cowboys' final preseason game over the weekend, but solely focused on the rushing numbers, you might have thought this team has one heck of an option should Dak Prescott ever go down with another injury.

Lance ran it 11 times for 90 yards against the Los Angeles Chargers, but went 33-for-49 passing, with 323 yards, one touchdown and ... wait for it ... five interceptions. You read that right. Lance basically gifted the backup job to Cooper Rush, if that is indeed the direction Dallas wants to go.

The erratic performance of Lance has led many Cowboys fans to wonder whether or not this team needs to go find another option behind Prescott. One former NFL quarterback and current analyst threw out a polarizing option for Dallas: pursuing Denver Broncos quarterback and former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson.

The Cowboys would be better off keeping Trey Lance than trading for Zach Wilson

If you watched any of Wilson's preseason, you'd wonder just what exactly Chase Daniel is seeing here. Wilson has had some positive moments this preseason, yes, but it's likely more due to the fact that Sean Payton has taken the "I can fix him" approach and allowed Wilson to look competent within his system.

That doesn't take away from the fact that Wilson is still far from a competent quarterback, even as a backup. If Wilson is well-protected, sure, he can make some throws. But, even a little pressure is going to make him look like a junior varsity backup, at best.

Why would the Cowboys pursue another 2021 draft bust when they've already swung and missed on one in Lance? Trey is a great dude, but he's had a hard time adjusting to the pro level. Wilson has also had a hard time adjusting and simply might not be cut out for this level, unless everything is going perfect around him.

We're talking about a quarterback who has a career completion percentage of just over 60 percent, has thrown more interceptions (25) than touchdowns (23) and a career 72.2 passer rating. He is 100 percent a bonafide draft bust.

If the Cowboys want to go find a better backup option, look no further than the Houston Texans, who could part ways with someone like Davis Mills in the final year of his rookie deal. Houston has C.J. Stroud, Mills, Case Keenum and Tim Boyle -- the latter two who might be competing for the backup job, if Mills is dealt.

If Dallas wanted to go out and make a respectable move, then trading a late pick for Mills would be the play, here. Getting someone with legitimate starting experience, who has performed at a halfway-admirable level, should be the priority.
