Grade the Deal: Dak Prescott record-breaking contract details revealed
By Mike Luciano
The Dallas Cowboys operated for most of the offseason without quarterback Dak Prescott signed to a long-term contract. Despite the lack of playoff success, Prescott's production is very clearly deserving a new contract
The Cowboys decided to finally give in to Prescott's demands, blessing him with a new contract that puts him in a tier all his own among NFL quarterbacks. Prescott and his agents sure do know how to extract money out of Jerry Jones.
Prescott is now the highest-paid player in the NFL, as he signed a four-year contract worth $240 million. At $60 million per year, the old record of $55 million per year, set by Green Bay's Jordan Love recently, is already paling in comparison to what Dak hammered out.
Not only is Prescott getting a massive $80 million signing bonus, but he is also receiving $231 million of his $240 million in guaranteed money. After months of consternation and uncertainty, the Cowboys have now locked in their leader for the long term.
Dak Prescott contract details with Dallas Cowboys revealed after huge extension
Prescott nearly completed 70% of his passes last season, topped 4,500 yards passing, and threw 36 touchdown passes against nine interceptions. Prescott was Second-Team All-Pro and finished second in MVP voting behind Lamar Jackson, making him the highest finisher in the NFC. The Cowboys needed to do everything possible to make sure this deal got done.
What were the Cowboys going to do without Dak? Promote Trey Lance? The free agent class for 2025, as is often the case for quarterbacks, is very weak. Outside of Georgia's Carson Beck and Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, the upcoming quarterback class isn't as good as last season.
The number $60 million per season and $240 million per four years looks eye-watering, but in a time when inferior quarterbacks like Jordan Love and Tua Tagovailoa are getting deals in the same ballpark, it becomes clear that someone was going to pay Dak this money. Good thing Dallas stepped up.
Prescott is getting game-changing money, but he was always going to hit that threshold. In getting this deal done, the Cowboys signed one of the best players at his position to a deal that keeps them competitive in a very weak NFC for years to come. They will always have a shot at winning with Dak, which is all you can ask of a QB.
