After one year, the Dallas Cowboys' 2023 draft class does not look promising. First-round pick Mazi Smith was invisible as a rookie and is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery on top of facing questions about his playing weight.

Meanwhile, second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker offered almost nothing in year one and is also recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. To make matters worse, Schoonmaker is dealing with a hamstring injury that's expected to sideline him for the duration of OTAs.

For all of their draft success, the Cowboys (like any team) have had their number of swings and misses. Fans will point to Taco Charlton as Dallas' biggest recent whiff, but Trysten Hill and Jaylon Smith are honorable mentions in that regard.

The second round in particular has been unkind to Dallas. Schoonmaker, Hill and Smith were all drafted in round two. Incredibly, they might not be the biggest round two disappointment in recent Cowboys history.

That title could belong to Kelvin Joseph, who was drafted in 2021. Cowboys fans haven't heard much about Joseph since he was traded to the Dolphins before last season. Now with the Chiefs, the former No. 44 overall pick has been making noise at OTAs.

Kelvin Joseph starring at Chiefs OTAs means absolutely nothing for Cowboys

Per reports out of Kansas City, Joseph balled out during 7-on-7 drills. He broke up multiple passes and even got on the receiving end of a Patrick Mahomes pass. Joseph has been working with the Chiefs' second-team defense, but it's notable that his performance caught the attention of team reporters.

For the Cowboys, though, this means absolutely nothing. Joseph shining during the offseason program is nothing new. He appeared to have turned a corner this time last year at OTAs and he followed it up with a solid training camp. He made a strong case to make the 53-man roster, but was ultimately dealt to the Dolphins in a rare player swap for cornerback Noah Igbinoghene.

The Dolphins waived Joseph in November after four appearances. He swiftly signed to the Seahawks practice squad and appeared in one game, playing eight special teams snaps. Shortly after the regular season ended, the Chiefs took a flier on Joseph in the form of a futures contract to have him compete on the 90-man roster throughout the offseason.

It remains to be seen if Joseph has a realistic shot of making the Chiefs' final roster. He's buried on the cornerback depth chart so he'll need to stack strong practices and hope for a potential injury to crack the rotation.

Even if Joseph sticks with Kansas City through training camp and preseason, it should be of zero concern to the Cowboys. They were right to move on when they did. Odds are his strong start to OTAs is just a flash in the pan. If we learned anything during Joseph's two years in Dallas, it's that the other shoe will always drop. Chiefs Kingdom will learn that soon enough.
