DeMarvion Overshown's quote about chasing No. 0 jersey will fire up Cowboys fans
By Jerry Trotta
The Dallas Cowboys lost their preseason opener against the Jaguars, but there were plenty of positive takeaways. Damone Clark and Deuce Vaughn were among the standouts, but Cowboys rookie third-round pick DeMarvion Overshown was arguably the biggest bright spot from the game.
Overshown saw plenty of snaps in the first half and entered the intermission as the team's leading tackler with six stops.
The Texas product finished with a couple of big stops on third down, including stonewalling Jaguars rookie running back Tank Bigsby at the first-down marker. He was always around the ball in the first half. Like Clark, he was very active sideline to sideline and his closing speed was on full display.
Among Overshown's motivation for his stellar debut? Proving he's worthy of the coveted No. 0 jersey, which he donned with the Longhorns.
Cowboys rookie DeMarvion Overshown proving he deserves the No. 0 jersey.
Earlier in the offseason, Micah Parsons and Jayron Kearse were interested in switching jersey numbers. Both players wanted No. 0 after the NFL implemented a rule change that allowed all position players sans offensive and defensive linemen to wear zero.
By the time the Cowboys reported for OTAs in late-May, though, Kearse confirmed to reporters that he'll be wearing his familiar No. 27 this year.
In order to switch numbers, players have to buy out the remaining unsold supply of their old numbers. Perhaps that didn't appeal to Kearse ... or Parsons.
Whatever the case, that opened the door for another player to claim No. 0. After his performance against Jacksonville -- and how he's carried himself since the draft -- most fans would agree that Overshown is the perfect pick.
Though a rookie, Overshown is a natural leader. He led the pregame huddle before kickoff on Saturday after warmups and was seen hyping up teammates after a big play. He even gave Deuce Vaughn a shoutout on social media after the game.
Overshown would likely be the first to tell you that he hasn't earned the No. 0 yet. After all, there's still two preseason games and a couple weeks of training camp left on the agenda before the regular season.
That said, "Agent 0" is well on his way to completing the chase.
Not a single player wore the number over the Cowboys first 63 seasons as a franchise. There's several reasons for that, but the trend was going to buck at some point and Overshown is a worthy nominee in that regard.
It's only a matter of time.
