The Dallas Cowboys reduced their roster from 90 to 53 players ahead of Tuesday's all-important deadline. They finally cut bait with 2023 draft picks Eric Scott and Viliami Fehoko, and traded tight end Peyton Hendershot to the Kansas City Chiefs in lieu of sending him to waivers.

It is worth noting that Dallas is still busy working to sign players so fans should brace for additional roster shuffling over the next several days.

First and foremost, Mike McCarthy and Co. must finalize the practice squad. League rules permit teams to carry 17 players on the practice squad. That essentially shrinks the number of cuts down from 90 to 70, but not every waived or released player finds their way back to the practice squad.

Dalvin Cook is on the way. The four-time Pro Bowler will be added to the practice squad once he officially signs his contract. The Cowboys have long had their eye on Cook, who will start on the practice squad to improve his conditioning and familiarize himself with the playbook.

Elsewhere, Josh Ball and Carl Lawson made it back to the practice squad. Ball and Lawson were among the Dallas' most surprising cuts. Ball arguably deserved to make the 53-man roster (certainly over Matt Waletzko) after an excellent preseason. In Lawson's case, the coaching staff reportedly want him to get in better conditioning, which isn't that surprising given how late he signed.

Cowboys practice squad FAQs:

Can other teams sign players off the Cowboys practice squad?

Yes. If another team wants to sign a player on the Cowboys practice squad they have full jurisdiction to sign that player to the active 53-man roster. A practice squad player can't be signed from one practice to another. They must be signed to a team's active roster.

Can practice squad players be protected from other NFL teams?

Every week all 32 teams can protect up to four practice squad players who cannot be signed to other teams. It will be interesting to watch how the Cowboys navigate this. With injuries to DaRon Bland, Sam Williams (season-ending) and Chuma Edoga, Dallas figures to take full advantage of this rule.

Can practice squad players play on game day?

Practice squad players can suit up in games as long are elevated to the active roster beforehand. However, each player can only be elevated a maximum of three times. At that point, the team must sign them to the active roster or the player must pass through waivers. If they pass through waivers and re-sign to the practice squad, their three-game minimum will reset.
