It isn't up for debate that running back is one of the Dallas Cowboys' weakest position groups. Nose tackle probably takes the cake, but it's hard to get excited over a group that's composed of Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle, Hunter Luepke and Deuce Vaughn.

That's whomThe Athletic's Jon Machota projects to make the Cowboys' 53-man roster. Third-year man Malik Davis and free-agent signing Royce Freeman will add more competition in training camp and could ultimately push one of Luepke or Vaughn off the team.

However, the point remains. None of these players will strike fear in opposing defenses, which are likely thrilled that Elliott is set up to be the lead back. A recent projection from ESPN has Elliott leading the way in carries, rushing yards and touchdowns, with Dowdle serving as the clear backup.

Cowboys fans have been clamoring for a RB signing or trade since the draft. Despite passing on countless opportunities, it appears the front offices recognizes the urgency to find an upgrade.

Rumored Cowboys motives don't bode well for Ezekiel Elliott

Cecil Lammey of 104.3 The Fan in Denver reports that the Cowboys could scowl the roster cuts market for running back help and could even trade for one before the 2024 regular season. Lammey floated the Broncos' own Javonte Williams, the Bears' Khalil Herbert and free-agent Myles Gaskin as potential targets.

This rumor does no bode well for Elliott's hopes of clinging to the RB1 job. It's worth noting that Gaskin likely wouldn't supplant Zeke as the starter, but Williams and Herbert both would serve as upgrades over the freshly-turned 29-year-old.

What makes Williams and Herbert so intriguing other than their overall talent is that the Cowboys might not have to trade for either of them.

Williams has purportedly lost a step after major knee surgery in 2022 and is on the periphery of Denver's RB room. Jaleel McLaughlin was the Broncos' best back this spring, while rookie Audric Estime is a favorite of the coaching staff. Even veteran Samaje Perine has looked worthy of a roster spot.

Meanwhile, Herbert could be collateral damage in Chicago after the Bears gave D'Andre Swift $24 million at the onset of free agency. The Bears are also bullish on 2023 fourth-round pick Roschon Johnson. Herbert will only count $1.087 million against the salary cap, but Chicago could save $1.055 million by cutting him and absorb just $32,000 in dead money.

Williams and Herbert might be the cream of this year's chopping block crop, but the Cowboys shouldn't leave any stone unturned in their pursuit of a RB. Having Elliott back will improve the running back room, but Dallas cannot be taken seriously this season if Elliott leads the backfield in touches.

Thankfully, it seems the front office finally recognizes that.
