Cowboys reward Malik Hooker with big-time extension during strong camp
The Dallas Cowboys have continued to keep their secondary strong, inking safety Malik Hooker to a three-year extension on Friday afternoon. Hooker, who was a first-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2017, signed with the Cowboys in 2021 and has become a rockstar in the Cowboys' secondary.
The Colts opted not to pick up Hooker's fifth-year option when he was in Indianapolis and now the Cowboys are reaping the benefits.
In 2022, Hooker graded out at 73.9 per PFF and had a coverage grade of 72.4. He finished the season with 62 tackles, three interceptions, and three defended passes. He was the Cowboys' best tackler this past year and now with this extension done, the Cowboys don't have to worry about losing him next offseason.
Hooker has impressed since joining the team and his interception of Dak Prescott in camp had fans even more excited for what could be yet another strong season in 2023.
What does Malik Hooker’s new deal look like? Contract details
Per Adam Schefter, the new extension is worth up to $24 million with $16.5 million guaranteed. He won't hit free agency until 2026, meaning the Cowboys have a really good secondary locked up for the foreseeable future.
Earlier this offseason, the Cowboys re-signed Donovan Wilson on a three-year deal, keeping him in Dallas for the next three years as well. This ensures that the Cowboys will have a strong duo at safety in 2023. Hopefully the team is able to keep Jayron Kearse past 2023 as well.
