Cowboys' Mike McCarthy addresses the media

Mike McCarthy addressed the media on Thursday for the first time since the Cowboys announced he'd return as head coach in 2024. Though McCarthy took accountability for the loss, the presser was a lose-lose situation.

Any confidence McCarthy expressed in next season would be taken out of context, and that's exactly what happened.

“We have established a championship program. It’s just not a world championship yet. …I know how to win. We will get over that threshold. I have total confidence, and that’s why I am standing here today.”

That's an impossible sell. The Chiefs and 49ers are the only teams in the league that can claim they've established a championship program. McCarthy has certainly fostered the most consistent Cowboys program since the mid 1990s, but a championship program? The only title Dallas has sniffed during McCarthy's tenure is the NFC East and that should be the bare minimum expectation with this roster.
