Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch out for season with neck injury

The Cowboys have rode a positive wave of injury luck for several weeks now, but the Dallas Morning News reported that linebacker Leighton Vander Esch will miss the rest of the season with the neck injury he suffered in Week 5.

Jerry Jones confirmed the news on 105.3 The Fan on Wednesday:

"We had just completely left it up to how he was evolving. But of course, it’s a very significant loss for us. He’s an integral part of that defense out there. We just wish him well. The nature of his potential injury here causes me to really think longer term and beyond what it means for next week or beyond what it means for next month relative to the team."

That is brutal news for the Cowboys, and we can't help but wonder what it means for Vander Esch's playing future, let alone his future in Dallas. If there's a silver lining to this, it's that Markquese Bell has filled in admirably since LVE went down. Bell and Damone Clark will continue to play the lion's share of snaps at linebacker.
