The Dallas Cowboys' 2023 draft class didn't contribute much of anything last season. Third-round pick DeMarvion Overshown was supposed to play meaningful snaps at linebacker, but a torn ACL suffered in preseason thrust first-round pick Mazi Smith into the spotlight.

As it turned out, Smith wasn't ready for the spotlight. He experienced a rough transition from college to the NFL, but in his defense the Cowboys' coaching staff (cough cough Dan Quinn) didn't do him any favors.

A formidable space-eater Michigan, Smith converted to a three-technique tackle as a rookie. In accordance with that, Smith lost a noticeable amount of weight. The weight loss was evident both in his physical appearance and his play on the field as he seldom won face-offs with opposing offensive linemen. The whole thing was detrimental to Smith's development.

To say this is a huge training camp for Smith would be an understatement. The Cowboys need an upgraded version of the player we saw in 2023. While camp is only one practice old, there's reason for optimism with the former No. 26 overall pick.

Cowboys' Mazi Smith looks noticeably different after reported weight gain

Smith looked noticeably heavier on day one of camp compared to the end of last season. Bryan Broaddus of 105.3 The Fan reported that Smith is up to 310 pounds, a significant jump from his reported 293-pound playing weight in year one. See for yourself, Cowboys fans.

It's important to note Smith has put on healthy weight. He said in a recent interview with the team's official website that he's happy with this diet and been eating the right things.

Smith underwent shoulder surgery after the 2023 season so it's unclear how much muscle mass he tacked on the last few months. Regardless, the former Wolverine has looked visibly more powerful and brawny during defensive line drills.

These are all positive signs for Smith as he enters a pivotal year two. There is plenty of time before Week 1 for him to bulk up even more. That is huge news for Mike Zimmer, who confirmed upon his arrival as defensive coordinator that Smith will return to his Michigan playing weight and convert back to his natural one-tech tackle position.

The Cowboys didn't press the issue this offseason to add a proven nose tackle. They only re-signed veteran journeyman Carl Davis and used a seventh-round pick on Justin Rogers. Sure enough, Smith has seen the lion's share of raps at NT in Oxnard. He's going to get every chance to prove he should be the starter.

While Smith's weight isn't quite where it should be, his bigger frame makes him one of the biggest early winners from camp.
