Cowboys fans call for 2 recent draft picks to be benched after Week 2 disaster
By Jerry Trotta
The NFL is a week-to-week league and the Dallas Cowboys have learned that the hard way to start the new season. After dog-walking the Browns last weekend, the Cowboys got dog-walked by the Saints in their home stadium, where they previously had a 16-game regular season winning streak.
Everyone is up in arms about Mike Zimmer's defense and rightfully so after it allowed touchdowns on six straight possessions. Zimmer clearly knows how to scheme and he even switched to a 5-2 defense in the second half as the 4-3 experiment got torched. It is fair to ponder if the Cowboys have the necessary horses at defensive tackle to allow Zimmer's defense to function.
While folks question the legitimacy of Dallas' defense, Mike McCarthy's offense has some serious warts that need to be addressed. Fans knew it all offseason, but it's obvious after two games that CeeDee Lamb and Jake Ferguson are the only "playmakers" on the offense.
McCarthy's offense started out slow last season as well, but fans have seen enough from two players in particular who should not see the field in Week 3 and potentially beyond.
Cowboys fans want RB Deuce Vaughn and WR Jalen Brooks to be benched
Vaughn was electric in the preseason for the second straight year, but again he has failed to carry it over into the regular season. McCarthy forced the Vaughn package on Sunday and it backfired. He carries four times for 11 yards and caught his lone target for six yards.
The 2023 sixth-round pick now has five carries for 15 yards on the season. The Cowboys' run-blocking was nothing to write home about, but Vaughn's limitations were on display. It's time for Dalvin Cook, who's on the practice squad, to replace Vaughn on the active roster.
Brooks arguably has a stronger case to be benched than Vaughn. A training camp and preseason standout two years in a row, Brooks committed two costly mistakes on Sunday.
First, Brooks whiffed on his blocking assignment on an end-around to Brandin Cooks that had the potential to go for a touchdown. Depth receivers have to be able to impact games in a blocking capacity (remember Noah Brown?). Brooks failed to do that and it arguably cost the Cowboys four points while the game was still in the balance.
Unfortunately for Brooks, he made a huge gaffe as a receiver as well. In the second quarter, he stumbled out of his break and Dak Prescott got picked off despite throwing a perfect pass against man coverage.
Tom Brady said on the FOX broadcast that Prescott shouldn't look Brooks way again. Well, if Cowboys fans could have it their way, Brooks will be on the bench next Sunday. Like Vaughn, Brooks hasn't been able to translate a flashy camp and preseason to when it matters most.
The Cowboys will not get a better chance to see what they have in rookie sixth-round pick Ryan Flournoy, who might just be the third-best wideout on the roster.
