The 2024 offseason will be pivotal to the short- and long-term future of the Dallas Cowboys. Simply put, the franchise could make seismic changes next year if the team falls short of its ultimate goal again. Spending big in free agency will serve as an immediate band-aid, but it goes without saying the Cowboys need a better showing in the NFL Draft to boost their odds of making a deep playoff run.

While the roster as currently constituted is talented and deep, Dallas got virtually zero production from its 2023 draft class.

The team had first-round pick Mazi Smith lose a ton of weight and converted him to a three-tech DT when he was drafted to be a space-eater, while second-rounder Luke Schoonmaker didn't even top 70 receiving yards on the season. The negative tone can be applied to all of the Cowboys' seven draft picks.

Luckily, April affords Dallas the chance to turn over a new leaf. With that in mind, let's break down each of the team's draft choices in 2024, 2025 and beyond.

List of Cowboys 2024 Draft Picks

  • Round 1: Pick No. 24
  • Round 2, Pick No. 56
  • Round 3, Pick No. 87
  • Round 5, Pick No. 174 (compensatory)
  • Round 6, Pick No. 216 (compensatory)
  • Round 7, Pick No. 233 (from LV)
  • Round 7, Pick No. 244

Thanks to the trades for Brandin Cooks and Trey Lance, the Cowboys are without a fourth- and fifth-round pick this year, respectively. They also lost their 2024 fifth-rounder when they traded up for cornerback Eric Scott Jr. in last year's draft.

They should, however, recoup a fifth-round compensatory pick for losing OL Connor McGovern and a sixth-round comp pick for losing TE Dalton Schultz in free agency. That would give the Cowboys a total of seven picks. Compensatory picks have not been finalized yet.

The 2025 pool of picks is unscathed thus far, though many Cowboys fans wouldn't hate to see the pool dwindle some in the name of making an all-in move this offseason. Based on recent history, we venture to say the Cowboys won't have all seven picks come April 2025.

If there's a trade to be made for a high-profile WR or game-breaking DT, Dallas should absolutely explore it. As we noted earlier, the 2024 season could be the final season for numerous longtime Cowboys if the team falls short again.
