4. Will Grier, QB

No cutting-edge analysis is necessary here. Dak Prescott is entrenched as the starter and the Cowboys re-signed Cooper Rush in free agency.

Rush's future in Dallas looked dicey before the front office swooped in after a canceled flight upended a scheduled free agent visit with the Raiders. Nevertheless, the 29-year-old returning to the Cowboys all but ruined whatever chance Grier had this offseason to cement himself as Prescott's backup.

While Grier could re-sign back to the practice squad, Dallas could add an extra player in the secondary or in the trenches (either offensive or defensive) by keeping two quarterbacks on the final roster.

The NFL passed a proposal to allow teams to have a third QB active on game days without consuming a roster spot. Grier's familiarity with the system makes him the favorite in that regard, but it doesn't help his chances of making the 53.
