5 Cowboys players to keep an eye on in NFL preseason Week 1
- Rookie running back turning heads
- Young wide receivers battling
- Third-year cornerback stepping up?
4. Deuce Vaughn, running back
Outside of Jalen Tolbert, are Cowboys fans more excited to watch anyone play in the preseason than Deuce Vaughn? Vaughn might even take the number one spot.
Everybody fell in love with his NFL Draft story as his dad was able to make the call as a scout from the Cowboys' war room. Everybody loves a good underdog story, and Vaughn is defying the odds just by being on an NFL roster right now. He's only 5-foot-5, but he was an All-American at Kansas State and found ways to rack up nearly 5,000 yards from scrimmage and 43 total touchdowns in three seasons.
This is the kind of stuff Dallas Cowboys fans are really excited about with Deuce Vaughn. He has some speed to him, and he's certainly got agility and quickness in space. He's obviously tough as well, but throwing his shoulder into guys isn't going to be his game in the NFL -- making them miss will be.
How easily is he able to make guys miss in the preseason? How well he does in preseason games could dictate his regular season role for the Cowboys in 2023.
5. KaVontae Turpin, WR/RS
Another offensive playmaker lands on the list but Turpin has been doing well at training camp in recent days and what's notable is that he's showing well offensively.
Turpin has got to have some kind of NFL record for the least amount of snaps played in a season while still making the Pro Bowl. He played just 62 offensive snaps for Dallas last season and 153 on special teams. He obviously made the Pro Bowl as a return specialist where he was excellent, but it's fair to say his roster spot may have been in question going into training camp based on the competition at wide receiver.
The Cowboys need Turpin to step up as a receiver in their offense and someone who can provide explosive plays there as well unless he's going to be other-worldly as a returner again.
