The legend of Hunter Luepke grows on the Dallas Cowboys

Another undrafted free agent that's been getting arguably more hype than any other around the NFL throughout the course of the offseason is Dallas Cowboys fullback Hunter Luepke. Luepke comes to the Cowboys from North Dakota State where he was an All-American and All-Conference performer.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com actually gave Luepke a draftable grade, and not just as a late-round flyer. He thought Luepke's versatility and athleticism made him an intriguing pick somewhere in round five.

"Versatile fullback with experience as a tailback, tight end and Wildcat option. Luepke is a jack-of-all-trades who has posted an impressive touchdown-per-touch ratio as both a runner and pass-catcher. He’s expected to test well and has the ability to compete for reps as a core special-teamer. While he has soft hands and has shown some route-running savvy, he will need to prove himself as a lead blocker if he is to excite NFL offensive coordinators."

Lance Zierlein, NFL.com

Zierlein's report came out before Luepke was able to test in the pre-draft process, and he did, in fact, test very well. Luepke showed off speed, quickness, agility, and explosiveness in his pre-draft workout, validating the things that consistently showed up on tape.

Based on the way Mike McCarthy used him in Green Bay, a lot of folks want to compare Luepke's potential impact to that of John Kuhn from his time with the Packers. Kuhn was a very good jack-of-all-trades for that Packers offense for a very long time, and despite never having over 400 yards from scrimmage, he wound up making multiple Pro Bowls and All-Pro teams.

The excitement of having a role player like that in Hunter Luepke is understandable. I think the Dallas Cowboys had a tremendous undrafted free agent group in 2023 and Luepke might just end up being their prized acquisition of the bunch.
