3. Brett Maher

The Cowboys are going into training camp with an unproven kicker. Trsitan Viscaino signed a reserve-future contract with Dallas after the 2019 season, but was waived in April 2020. Since then, he has only kicked in ten career games. The good news is he has gone 11 of 12.

With Viscaino the only kicker on the roster, most are wondering if Brett Maher returning could be a possibility. Maher made the most of his second chance in Dallas last season, going 29 out of 32 on field goal attempts. However, the playoffs showed signs of the old Maher from 2019. He missed four extra points in their first playoff game against the Buccaneers, the only blemish on an otherwise perfect night. After the game Viscaino was signed.

McCarthy indicated at the start of the offseason the team was starting over at kicker. Most suspected Dallas would bring in a veteran -- maybe Robbie Gould or Mason Crosby -- but so far that has not happened. With a talented offense and defense, special teams remains the only group with big questions at a key position. Kickers matter and right now pinning their hopes on Viscaino is not sitting well with most.

Bringing back Maher to at least compete would make total sense. The last thing the Cowboys need is a kicker who cannot make the big ones. Viscaino could surprise everyone, but it would not be surprising to see Maher trot out there at some point during camp.
