Cowboys pick they got right: Mazi Smith, DT, Michigan
So many fans had their hearts set on an offensive weapon that it felt like a letdown when Mazi Smith was announced as their selection in Round 1. There were also those who compared it to 2017 when they took Taco Charlton from the same program, but even Charlton called out that notion as nonsense.
Charlton joined a team that was trending in the wrong direction under Jason Garrett and was also a panic selection since every other defensive end was off the board. Smith, on the other hand, was one of the top defensive tackles in the entire class and the best nose tackle available.
Smith is a monster at 6-3 and 323 pounds but moves with more agility than most his size. His blend of speed and power are impressive and he's going to be a problem for any opposing linemen that tries blocking him one-on-one.
There will be questions about his ability to play on third down but even if he's not out there early in his career on pass rushing situations, he's going to help the Cowboys tremendously just by forcing defenses into third-and-longs.
For years, they have had plenty of pass-rushers but they've struggled to slow down the rushing attack for far too long. Adding Smith should help them tremendously in this area and even if he doesn't rack up insane stats, his presence is going to be felt.
