NFL bombshell may have spared Jerry Jones from a colossal Cowboys blunder

The Dallas Cowboys have more than enough position battles to last the duration of training camp, and the backup quarterback competition between Joe Milton and Sam Howell could be the most entertaining of the bunch when all is said and done.

Buzz had even been building for the Cowboys to make a run at Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby in the supplemental draft.

Adding Brendan Sorsby to the QB room would have thrown another wrinkle into an already unsettled backup competition, but the decision was taken out of Jerry Jones' hands, as the NFL decided not to conduct a supplemental draft, forcing Sorsby to wait until 2027 to enter the league following a troubling betting scandal.

The Sorsby chatter took off after former Cowboys scout Bryan Broaddus, now with 105.3 The Fan, said that he "wouldn't be surprised" if Dallas used a second-round pick on Sorsby. Thankfully, that hypothetical can remain exactly where it belongs: in the realm of hypotheticals.

Luckily for the Cowboys, Jerry Jones won't be able to draft Brendan Sorsby

While controversial and stunning, the NFL's decision is in the Cowboys' best interest, as the franchise is in the midst of its first distraction-free offseason in years.

Not only would drafting Sorsby have thrown a wrench into the QB2 battle, but it also would have sparked an entirely unnecessary conversation about Dak Prescott.

Fair or not, some corners of the media would have tried to turn a supplemental draft pick into a discussion about Prescott's job security, forcing the face of the franchise to answer questions that don't need to be asked at this point in time. Competition may bring out the best in Prescott, but Dallas gains nothing from inviting that distraction.

The magnitude of Sorsby's scandals is impossible to overstate.

It was found that Sorsby placed over 9,000 wagers while in college totaling north of $90,000. He even placed bets on the quarterback who started in front of him at Indiana. Any team that drafts him in 2027 has to be absolutely certain that he's cleaned up his act. That's a big question mark right now.

As much as Jerry Jones enjoys making headlines, Dallas doesn't need another quarterback storyline lurking behind Prescott. Sorsby is going to command attention wherever he ends up, and the Cowboys are better off avoiding that circus altogether.

Milton and Howell don't inspire much confidence at the moment, but there are worse backup quarterback situations around the league.

Dallas still believes Milton has the tools to smooth out the rough edges in his game and develop into a capable No. 2. In the meantime, Howell's 17 career starts provide a valuable safety net while also giving Milton legitimate competition.

Adding Sorsby to this roster at the onset of training camp would have been asking for trouble. Thankfully, the decision was taken out of Jerry Jones' hands.
