Late last week, former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was tapped by the Pittsburgh Steelers to replace Mike Tomlin, who stepped down after 19 seasons following the team's 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round.

McCarthy, who went 49-35 in five seasons in Dallas and led America's Team to three consecutive postseason berths from 2021 to 2023 before parting ways with the franchise following the 2024 campaign, took the last year off and is now just the fourth head coach the Steelers have hired since 1969, joining Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, and Tomlin, all of whom won at least one Super Bowl.

McCarthy's first order of business is to find a new offensive coordinator, as Arthur Smith, who received head-coaching and OC interest from other NFL clubs, opted to take the collegiate path and will spend his 2026 as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State.

And it didn't take McCarthy long to hit up the Cowboys in his search, as Adam Schefter reported early Wednesday that Dallas tight ends coach Lunda Wells is expected to interview for the position.

When McCarthy was hired as the Cowboys' head coach in 2020, one of his early hires was Wells, who'd spent the previous eight seasons in various offensive assistant roles with the New York Giants.

An offensive lineman during his playing days, Wells helped develop Dalton Schultz into one of the top tight ends in the league and has done the same with Jake Ferguson, who had the third-most receptions among TEs in 2025, catching a career-high 82 passes for 600 yards and a career-best eight touchdowns.

McCarthy is actually the second former Cowboys coach to request an interview with Wells, as Dan Quinn recently interviewed the 42-year-old to become his new offensive coordinator with the Washington Commanders, a job that ultimately went to David Blough, who was surprisingly promoted to the position after spending just two years as an assistant quarterbacks coach.

So, the Southern University alum is obviously viewed in high regard across the league. When the interview with the Steelers will take place has yet to be determined, but for now, Wells' attention is on his duties as the head coach of the West team at the East-West Shrine Bowl, with the annual collegiate all-star contest taking place on Tuesday night at The Star.
