Earlier this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys thought they found a gem in undrafted tight end Michael Trigg. The rookie got off to a hot start in his first NFL training camp, and he caught four passes in the team's preseason opener, but his momentum was halted by a toe injury suffered in that game.
Trigg has missed a little over a week of practice due to the lingering toe issue, but thankfully, he's returning right in the nick of time. He returned to practice on Wednesday, which bodes well for his chances of suiting up in Friday's preseason finale.
Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, his return to practice really doesn't matter, and neither does anything he does against the Saints. The injury holding him out halted any chance he had of cracking the 53-man roster, and frankly, made the decision much easier for Brian Schottenheimer.
Michael Trigg's injury ended his chances of making the Cowboys' roster
The main reason Michael Trigg doesn't have much of a leg to stand on with the Cowboys anymore is because of their current tight end rotation. It's basically already set in stone.
Jake Ferguson will be the starter, Brevy Spann-Ford will be the No. 2 and seems primed for a bigger pass-catching role in Year 3, and Luke Schoonmaker will round out the rotation as a blocker and special-teamer.
If he was fully healthy for all of camp, perhaps the Baylor product could've pushed Spann-Ford for a roster spot, but an injury is a devastating blow to a player who already had little chance of making it. Frankly, even if he was healthy, it was going to be an uphill battle since he was on the roster bubble.
The only thing Trigg can control on Friday is how things play out next. If he plays well, perhaps he gets waived and re-signed after the opening wave of cuts or is brought back as insurance in case an injury materializes, and he could be a player they keep waiving and re-signing throughout the season.

The other option is that a strong showing in the Saints game reminds Schottenheimer and TEs coach Lunda Wells of his potential when healthy, he is stashed on the practice squad in hopes of eventually being promoted to the active roster before making his NFL debut at some point in 2026.
The fact of the matter is that Michael Trigg is going to be one of the names who falls victim to the Dallas Cowboys' roster cuts, and unfortunately, his return from injury came too late to do anything about it.
Something tells us his time in Dallas won't end this weekend, but fans should not expect to read his name when the 53-man roster is revealed on Sunday.
