Dallas Cowboys owner and de facto GM Jerry Jones has to be absolutely thrilled with what the Dallas Mavericks just did. For just a few months, Mavs GM Nico Harrison and their new ownership group are now the most reviled people in Dallas just a few days after the Brian Schottenheimer debacle.
The Mavericks changed the very foundation of the NBA, trading future Hall of Famer and All-NBA regular Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for a package headlined by Anthony Davis and one singular first-round pick. Even non-Mavericks fans were stunned, cursing Harrison's name for getting such a paltry return.
Cowboys star Micah Parsons joined in the cacophony of Dallas residents who saw their jaws collectively hit the floor with a late-night Shams Charania tweet so shocking that many assumed he was hacked. Parsons' reaction sums up the feelings of an entire city who remains gutted and confused.
Parsons was just as shocked as all the other Cowboys fans out there, as he had no idea what the Mavericks were thinking. This is a continuation of one of the most baffling two-week periods in Dallas sports history, a week that set both their football and basketball franchises back several years.
Cowboys' Micah Parsons reacts to Mavericks' Luka Doncic trade
Doncic's trade was so backward not only for the lack of value the Mavericks received in return, but for the fact they gave away a generational offensive talent at the peak of his powers to a rival. Imagine if the Cowboys willingly traded Parsons to the Eagles or 49ers. It would be a fireable offense.
Dallas sports are not in a good place right now, and ownership is the contributing factor between many of the struggling teams in the DFW area. Between Jones' mismanagement and Mark Cuban giving up his magic touch by selling his majority stake in the Mavs, ownership has ruined both rosters.
Much like the Cowboys, the Mavericks will likely have enough baseline talent to not be a complete embarrassment. However, with the star power gradually ebbing away for both franchises, championships might be very hard to come by for these two.
In the span of three weeks, the Cowboys fired Mike McCarthy, hired Schottenheimer, and saw the Mavs trade Doncic. The Rangers aren't favorites to win the AL West. The Stars may be this area's last hope this year, as the immediate future for this city's sports fanbases looks fairly grim.
