Marcus Spears has bold coaching fix for Cowboys after Matt Eberflus flop

It's bold, but it would be a good move.

The Dallas Cowboys are on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator after Matt Eberflus was fired less than 48 hours after the season finale loss against the New York Giants. Former Cowboys defensive end Marcus Spears has a solution that fans may like, and it makes sense.

On ESPN's NFL Live, Marcus Spears was asked who should be the Cowboys’ next defensive coordinator, and he didn’t hesitate to name former Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris. Spears pointed to Morris’ history of developing defensive backs, and Morris has already emerged as a popular candidate to help fix one of the NFL’s worst defenses in 2025.

"Coverage is a big thing for Raheem, and if you notice, every place that he's been, defensive coordinator-wise or head coach, he's always had a star corner," Spears said. "That's just what he believes in."

Morris has had defensive success everywhere he's been for more than two decades. He was the defensive quality control coach during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Super Bowl run back in the 2002 season, where he coached Hall of Fame secondary players like John Lynch, Ronde Barber and Super Bowl 37 MVP, Dexter Jackson.

Morris was also the defensive coordinator for the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams back in the 2021 season. It helped to have a monster like Aaron Donald controlling the line of scrimmage, but it's no coincidence that Morris has been a part of multiple Super Bowl defenses.

Young cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. could really use someone like Morris and his expertise to help him tap into his potential. After a sloppy game on Christmas Day against the Commanders, it became apparent that Revel Jr. could get a lot better with fundamentals like tackling. A coach of Morris' caliber could really make a huge difference in the secondary.

Jerry Jones made it clear that it doesn't matter if his next defensive coordinator is a former head coach or not. Morris is a clear candidate thanks to his history of helping the secondary, and it's something that could benefit the entire defense.
