Latest trade rumor gives Cowboys perfect chance to upgrade at RB
It's been a rough season for the Dallas Cowboys rushing attack but fortunately, this thing called the trade deadline exists. If a playoff contender has a glaring weakness, they have a chance to patch the hole up before the trade deadline. This year's trade deadline is on November 5th, giving the Cowboys a few more weeks to try and fix their issues.
One of the Cowboys' biggest issues is their run game, or lack thereof. The Cowboys rank dead last in rushing yards this season with 463 yards on the ground, trailing the second-to-last Raiders by 14 yards. Dallas thought that adding a washed-up Ezekiel Elliott would be enough to bolster this group but I don't think I have to tell you that the move has not worked out.
Elliott has just 115 yards off 38 carries and Rico Dowdle, the leading rusher, has 59 carries for 246 yards. Meanwhile, Derrick Henry leads the NFL in rushing with 704 yards and the Cowboys not only had a chance to land him but Henry wanted to join the 'Boys.
While it's too late to sign Henry, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys can still try to add some help to their run game so that the unit isn't completely useless. One name to keep an eye on is Bears running back Khalil Herbert, who is buried on the depth chart in Chicago.
According to KSTP's Darren Wolfson, Herbert was someone that the Minnesota Vikings were looking to add before the trade deadline. The Bears ultimately said no and the Vikings traded for Cam Akers instead. So why are we still discussing Herbert as a possibility for the Cowboys if the Bears already turned a team down?
Well, according to Wolfson, the Bears were looking for at least a fifth-round pick in the Herbert deal and the Vikings gave up a sixth-rounder to land Akers. There's also a good chance that Chicago didn't want to do business with Minnesota since the two both reside in the NFC North. Again, that's not a problem for the Cowboys.
Khalil Herbert would give the Cowboys run game a massive boost
Herbert, a former sixth-round pick by the Bears in 2021, has had at least 400 rushing yards in each of his previous three seasons with a career-high 731 rushing yards in 2022. He also found the end zone five total times that year and would be a welcomed sight for the Cowboys offense.
With Herbert sitting behind D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson on the Bears' running back depth chart, why shouldn't the Cowboys inquire about him? A Day 3 pick would be more than worth it to add help to an offense that desperately needs it and who knows? Maybe this could be the move that helps the Cowboys turn things around in 2024.
