It was reported after Mike McCarthy's departure that the Dallas Cowboys would conduct an extensive search for their next head coach. Well, almost a week has passed and there are only a handful of names in the mix for the job.

The Cowboys obviously love to drag their feet with these things to allow for maximum media coverage, but fans would have hoped for more candidates at this juncture.

As of this writing, Dallas has completed interviews with Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and former Jets head coach Robert Saleh. Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier will interview Monday. No interview has been set with Deion Sanders, though multiple outlets have reported there is "mutual interest" between the two sides.

Of those candidates, it is hard not to circle Moore as the current favorite. While he doesn't have the experience of Sanders, Saleh and Frazier, he checks arguably the two most important boxes: an organizational upbringing and familiarity with Jerry Jones.

If you read the tea leaves from NFL insiders, Moore is the early favorite for the job. That alone is frightening for Cowboys fans. If you really want to be terrified, though, get a load of the latest Moore updates.

Latest Kellen Moore coaching update will terrify Cowboys fans

According to Joseph Hoyt of DLLS, Moore has already reached out to coaches about joining his potential staff. Clarence Hill Jr. of DLLS added that some of those assistants used to work for the Cowboys.

There is a lot to take away from that. For starters, every head coaching candidate obviously should have some idea of who they want to join their staff. A candidate would be laughed out of the room or Zoom meeting if they interviewed without presenting some names. It's not necessarily "news" that Moore is working the phones, but it is noteworthy.

This all but confirms that Moore is a serious candidate for the job. The nugget about Moore reaching out to former Cowboys coaches is particularly alarming. Some members of Mike McCarthy's staff could be in contention, but let's dive a little deeper than that.

Could we be talking about former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus returning to Dallas after he was fired by the Bears? What about Mike Nolan? Could former players-turned coaches Leon Lett and Andre Gurode return to the staff? All three of Nolan, Lett and Gurode were on Jason Garrett's staff in Garrett's final season in 2019.

The door is open for so many possibilities and that is what is so concerning. Moore has ties to the Chargers and Eagles from his time as offensive coordinator. If Moore is the favorite for the job, we hope he branches out beyond his Dallas connections to assemble his staff.
