The Dallas Cowboys are one game away from their season being over, which means team owner Jerry Jones is back to making promises about how things will be different next year. It has unfortunately become an annual tradition for Cowboys fans, and the team typically falls short of offseason expectations, so fans don’t even get their hopes up anymore.
One of the promises Jones is making now is that Dallas will be a better defensive team next season. Appearing on 105.3 The FAN Tuesday morning, the longtime owner said, “We will get better on defense, I promise you that.”

Jerry Jones vows that Cowboys will be better on defense next season
Dallas fans likely heard that and said sure, we’ll believe it when we see it. The Cowboys defense has struggled in recent years since Dan Quinn left for the Washington Commanders, so this is a promise that Jones has been working on over multiple offseasons. The Cowboys have had three defensive coordinators in three seasons, and Jones admits the constant change likely contributed to the struggles, but fans are ready to see another change.
With how Dallas’ defense looked throughout the season, it didn’t take long for Cowboys fans to start calling for Matt Eberflus’ job. However, it remains unclear what his future is, as Jones defended him on Tuesday morning. During the same radio appearance, Jones argued that the issues aren’t all on Eberflus, saying what took place defensively this season was a team-wide breakdown.
That’s always the case; football is too complicated of a sport for anything to be one person’s fault. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that change isn’t needed. Regardless of who’s coordinating the defense next season, Dallas will need to upgrade the players on the roster. The Cowboys started that process at the trade deadline, with Jones actually delivering on the promise to make a big acquisition.
With Quinnen Williams making a difference since being added to the defensive line, it seems likely that his brother, linebacker Quincy Williams, could be joining the party this offseason. If the Cowboys can actually make several other significant additions, they may improve on the defensive side of the ball. For now, Jerry Jones’ promise is just talk, until fans can see the action.
