The Dallas Cowboys' season is on the verge of being over after their 27-17 home loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football. Sitting at 3-5-1 going into the bye week, Dallas is three games back of the final wild card spot in the NFC.
It would take a special second half of the season for the Cowboys to even sniff playoff contention, but Jerry Jones still seems hell-bent on improving the roster before Tuesday's trade deadline.
"There is one trade I can do. And I am leaning towards doing it," Jones said, via Clayton Holloway of NFL Network.
Just like his radio hit with Sirius XM on Monday, during which Jones revealed he had a trade lined up, the 83-year-old said he did not want to give information about who the player is.
It sure sounds like Cowboys' Jerry Jones still wants to make trades before the deadline
That is a terrifying thought for Cowboys fans.
It makes little sense for Dallas to go on the aggressive to improve the team. They've dropped winnable games against the Bears, Panthers, and now the Cardinals. With games upcoming versus the Eagles, Chiefs, and Lions, the season could unravel in a hurry. They also have to face the Chargers and Vikings, who have a combined 10-7 record this season.
Now, if there's a trade to be made that can help the Cowboys in 2026 and beyond, Jones should absolutely pull the trigger. While this season's defense can't be salvaged, that shouldn't stop Jones from pursuing someone like Maxx Crosby or Jeffrey Simmons. They can help Dallas jump right back into contention, assuming the front office makes other sound investments on the defense.
But as far as making a trade or two to help on the margins, what's the point?
DeMarvion Overshown will provide a huge boost when he's back after the bye, but the goal with Overshown should be to have him hitting his stride going into the offseason so he comes out firing in 2026.
In terms of personnel, there is too much deadwood to turn the defense around. And it's probably safe to say that Matt Eberflus isn't the answer at defensive coordinator. From the coaching staff to the players, this team is at least five or six pieces away from being a respectable defense.
That doesn't seem to be of any concern to Jones before Tuesday's deadline.
