The Dallas Cowboys knew that this team was going nowhere fast with Matt Eberflus in charge of the defense. Even though they swung big when they hired Philadelphia Eagles assistant Christian Parker and tasked him with fixing this unit, asking a ton from him in Year 1 could come back to haunt them.

FanSided.com declared that the biggest gamble Dallas is taking during the 2026 NFL season is hiring Parker to repair their defense. Even though Parker has quite a pedigree and has done great work with young DBs like Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, it might take a year to adjust to his new role.

As noted, Vic Fangio disciples don't always have a very strong record when it comes to getting a unit turned around in their debut season as a coordinator. Their success is oftentimes tied to their level of raw defensive talent.

Parker may not have the horses to take this defense from unwatchable to elite just by touching down in Dallas.

Dallas Cowboys' Christian Parker hire named their biggest 2026 gamble

While Brandon Staley's 2020 Rams and Anthony Campinale's 2025 Jaguars ranked first and eighth in points per game allowed, respectively, one had Aaron Donald in his prime, and one had a very deep, aggressive collection of proven veterans. Dallas may not have that same firepower.

Other Fangio deputies like Sean Desai, Ed Donatell and Clint Hurtt for the 2021 Bears, 2022 Vikings and 2022 Seahawks ranked 22nd, 25th, and 30th in points allowed, respectively. This defense is lethal, but it takes time to implement.

Many of Dallas' key players may not actually have the ability to thrive in this scheme. The Cowboys are, at the very least, setting Parker up nicely for the future once he sees who can and can't fit in his defensive vision.

After adding Rashan Gary via trade and using first-round NFL Draft picks on Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence just a few months ago, this defense is a young unit with potential that needs the right schematic kick in the rear end to take off.

Fangio's assistants have had some mixed track records, but Staley managed to land a head coach gig and a second DC job, and Campinale should get more HC buzz if he can replicate his 2025 season again in 2026.

If he turns around one of the league's most pathetic units, Parker may end up becoming a household name in league circles rather quickly.
