Dak Prescott is very quietly one of the NFL's longest-tenured quarterbacks. While the front office played games with his contract extension two years ago, the Dallas Cowboys haven't had real questions at the quarterback position in quite some time.

The QB2 spot has been a much different story. Cooper Rush had that job for a new years, but Dallas has repeatedly tried to get younger behind Prescott, trading for Trey Lance before the 2023 season and then trading for Patriots backup Joe Milton last offseason.

Starter or otherwise, it’s always fun to keep up with former Cowboys quarterbacks. While others were more accomplished, few former Dallas backups developed a following quite like Ben DiNucci.

Unfortunately for DiNucci, he is back on the unemployment line after his Broncos contract expired following Denver's loss in the AFC Championship Game.

Former Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci is a free agent once again

The Broncos signed DiNucci to their practice squad after starting QB Bo Nix suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

DiNucci was a member of Denver's practice squad in 2023. With Sean Payton in need of an emergency option, he turned to a familiar face. Shopping on the quarterback market in late-January is never fun, so the Broncos had to be thrilled that DiNucci was available.

Despite making two stops in Denver, DiNucci never played for the AFC West champs. Before resurfacing during the playoffs, the former James Madison star had stints with the Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, and Atlanta Falcons, respectively.

Buried on the depth chart at each stop, DiNucci only saw preseason action with those clubs. He hasn’t appeared in a regular-season game since 2020, when he played three games for the Cowboys during Mike McCarthy’s first season, including one start.

In his only NFL start, DiNucci completed 21 of 40 passes for 180 yards and zero touchdowns while losing two fumbles.

DiNucci has turned into a cult hero around the NFL, often breaking the news himself on social media whenever he lands with a new team. He’s fully leaned into the journeyman role.

Still just 29 years old, odds are DiNucci will resurface again in 2026. He might need a big injury to break through as a backup, but there is still value in being a third-stringer.

For what it's worth, Will Grier is a free agent this offseason. The Cowboys could bring him back, but DiNucci would become an option if Grier is scooped up by another team.
