Former Cowboys first-round draft pick is already in the 'bust' conversation

Not ideal, but also not surprising.

You probably knew who this blog was about, didn't you?

For basically every week of the offseason, something's been written about NFL players who might already be busts. It's certainly a conversation worth chewing on – especially when there aren't games to watch – but it's also undeniably Peak Offseason Content. People love a list of players who aren't good almost as much as they love a list of players who are good, yet no one's talking about them. We just love lists, apparently.

And every 'could be a bust' list that's appeared on the internet this offseason has come with one specific Cowboys player: Tyler Guyton. At this rate, he may start appearing on underrated lists by the time the season starts. Things haven't gone well for Guyton since getting drafted before the 2024 season, and it's been bad enough for Bleacher Report to lightly suggest that he may already be in danger of losing his job and roster spot.

Cowboys LT Tyler Guyton desperately needs a bounce-back season in 2025

"It’s no secret Tyler Guyton didn't play well as a rookie. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed six sacks in pass protection, earned a 51.3 run-blocking grade and was flagged 18 times to earn an ugly 49.4 overall mark from the site. That resulted in the Dallas Cowboys benching the 29th overall pick, and he was very candid during OTAs when talking about his performance as a rookie ...

"... However, the Oklahoma product will head into training camp as the Cowboys' starting left tackle this season. The fact that the front office didn't add any clear competition for the job should give him some confidence heading into year two. That being said, backup Asim Richards did make one start and got some playing time down the stretch of last season, while rookie Ajani Cornelius is lurking in the background if the second-year pro gets off to a slow start. Considering Dallas is clinging to its Super Bowl window, the coaching staff might not have much patience, either."

I mean, they're not wrong. Would PFF stats lie? (/runs and hides) 300+ words about how your starting left tackle is maybe not an NFL-caliber player is never something anyone likes to read, nor is the phrase 'clinging to its Super Bowl window.' That said, B/R isn't wrong. The truth hurts!

The good news? Head coach Brian Schottenheimer circled Guyton as a player who could make a jump this season. The Oklahoma product put in a lot of work this offseason, including altering his diet and reaching out to franchise great Tyron Smith for one-on-one coaching.

None of that means Guyton will improve, but it is encouraging he recognizes the pressure he's under to perform. Another rollercoaster year could lead to some tough decisions in 2026.
