For the Dallas Cowboys fans excitedly awaiting the reunion between DeMarco Murray and Jason Witten with the Oklahoma coaching staff, I have bad news for you. Their reunion in Norman provided a major trip down memory lane from the mid-2010s, but the nostalgia ended just as quickly as it began.
After spending the last five seasons as the running backs coach at his alma mater, Murray is finally turning the page and leaving OU. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the ex-Offensive Player of the Year just landed his first NFL job after being hired for the same position with the Kansas City Chiefs.
It was previously reported by CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz that Andy Reid was targeting Murray for his coaching staff, and they wasted no time to finalize a deal. The Cowboys can't help but be proud of their ex-RB, especially since the Chiefs are often used as a launch pad to further coaching success.
Sources: The #Chiefs are hiring former NFL RB and current Oklahoma RBs coach DeMarco Murray as their RBs coach on Andy Reid’s staff.

Former Dallas Cowboys great DeMarco Murray is joining the Chiefs' coaching staff
Rhamondre Stevenson and Eric Gray are among the running backs the three-time Pro Bowler coached with the Sooners, but was more well-known for his recruiting prowess. However, while Murray was consistently able to lure top talent to Norman, he was unable to get the most out of it.
Oklahoma ranked outside the top 100 in rushing yards per game in 2025, which held the offense back. OU fans were even calling for his job this season. For as nasty as he was in Dallas, Murray making the leap to the NFL is fishy after six primarily mediocre seasons among the college ranks.
Still, the 38-year-old is the latest addition to a revamped offensive staff in Kansas City that was headlined by the return of Eric Bienemy as offensive coordinator. The Chiefs boasted one of the NFL's worst rushing attacks as of late, but this hire could reveal their draft plans in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
The Chiefs ranked 25th in the NFL in rushing yards per game in 2025, but neither Isiah Pacheco or Kareem Hunt is a bell-cow RB. So now that they brought in a record-setting back to coach their RBs, you have to wonder if it signals their interest in drafting Notre Dame star Jeremiyah Love with the No. 9 pick.
To me, this screams name value hire solely given how dangerous he was with the Cowboys. The college track record isn't anything to phone home about, and it's not like he's inheriting some elite situation in Kansas City, though he would be the perfect mentor for a blue-chip prospect like Love.
Cowboys fans remember the days of Murray, Dez Bryant, and Tony Romo torching defenses like it was yesterday. We'll all be rooting for Murray in Kansas City and hope that he continues to climb the coaching ladder.
