First look at Caleb Downs in Cowboys uniform isn't sitting well with fans

No, Dallas Cowboys fans have not come down from cloud nine since last Thursday, and frankly, they shouldn’t. Caleb Downs falling outside the top five felt like a pipe dream. Watching him land in Dallas still feels like the league accidentally hit “simulate draft” and forgot to fix it.

We all know that fantasy football manager, but Downs being a Cowboy is no fantasy; it's the kind of trade that usually gets vetoed.

Reality settled in on Friday -- just ahead of Day 1 of rookie minicamp -- when the Cowboys announced they signed Downs and five other draft picks to their rookie deals. Before long, Cowboys reporters posted photos of Downs stretching with his new teammates and dapping up Brian Schottenheimer and Christian Parker.

The only problem? Downs showed up in No. 18. Cowboys fans are not happy, and it's hard to blame them. The best player on your defense cannot, under any circumstance, wear No. 18. It looks wrong -- borderline illegal -- because everything about Downs in a Cowboys uniform looks exactly how it should. Except that part.

Dallas Cowboys fans cannot stand Caleb Downs wearing No. 18, and they're right

Look, jersey numbers aren't everything. There's real truth to the idea that a player makes the number. By no means is No. 11 a sexy choice for an edge rusher, but Micah Parsons made it his own. And while No. 88 is sacred for Cowboys wide receivers, not every great player has to follow the script.

This, however, is the one exception. Whatever "it" is, Downs in No. 18 isn't.

The good news is that it doesn't sound like Downs has settled on the number. He was asked about it again on Friday, and sounded like he's keeping his options open (h/t Josephy Hoyt, Dallas Morning News).

"We're gonna see what happens. That's the only thing I'm going to say about that."

Downs belongs in a single digit. He wore No. 2 at Ohio State, which currently belongs to cornerback Cobie Durant, who inked a one-year deal with Dallas in March. Brian Schottenheimer hinted that Downs and Durant may be negotiating behind the scenes.

Durant wore No. 14 for his entire Rams tenure (four years), but Markquese Bell has that. Bell previously wore No. 41, which just so happens to be available. If Downs has his heart set on No. 2, he might need to start making some calls, if he hasn't already.

Everything about Downs in a Cowboys uniform looks perfect. Once that number change becomes official, those jerseys will be flying off the racks.
