In the wake of the 2026 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys still have a few needs they need to fill to round out their roster, and running back should be at the top of the list. Javonte Williams had a fantastic year in 2025, but the RB room lacks depth. It isn't in a position to sustain success if Williams were to suffer an injury.

Malik Davis is a fine RB3, but isn't dynamic, and outside of a meaningless Week 18 game, 2025 fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue has not shown enough to warrant an expanded role just yet, so the Cowboys should look for a more reliable RB2. Not only would adding a trusted veteran make Williams' life easier, but it'd make one of the NFL's better run games more dynamic.

And thankfully, Dallas has plenty of options if they want to address the RB room. ESPN analyst Mike Clay floated three running backs as possible post-draft trade candidates: Trey Benson, James Conner, and Alvin Kamara, and floated the Cowboys as potential scheme fits with all three of them.

Jerry Jones can right a major wrong if the Dallas Cowboys trade for Trey Benson

Frankly, landing any of these guys would be ideal, but one should stand out to Jerry Jones. Both Conner and Kamara are on the wrong side of 30 and coming off of season-ending injuries, so acquiring Benson should be more intriguing than a goal-line back or receiving back behind Williams.

The Arizona Cardinals' offseason has made Benson expendable, as they drafted Notre Dame star running back Jeremiyah Love with the third overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and signed Tyler Allgeier in free agency, so it appears that both he and Conner are on the outs in a crowded RB room.

Benson is only 23, so he still has a bright NFL future. The Florida State Seminole started his career backing up Conner, but when he went down earlier this season, he took over. But then he got hurt and missed the remainder of the season, which cemented the belief he is best suited as a high-end RB2.

When the Cowboys were looking for a running back during the 2024 NFL Draft, they did some homework on Benson. They even hosted him on a 30-visit, but failed to come away with him or Jonathon Brooks, who was the other running back Jerry Jones presumably had atop his draft board.

The issue with Benson is that he has less than 500 rushing yards across his first two NFL seasons, but he averaged nearly five yards per carry. He was wildly efficient in limited action and has sub 4.4 speed, so for the low price of a Day 3 pick, Dallas should consider adding some juice to the RB room.
