The Dallas Cowboys seemingly don't have a quarterback controversy anymore after Joe Milton's sturdy performance in the preseason finale. Finally playing calm and on time, Milton's right arm did the rest as he threw a pretty 29-yard touchdown and finished with a 97.5 passer rating.

Milton likely clinched the backup job with that showing, but it remains to be seen if the Cowboys want Will Grier back as the third-stringer. Grier is fine, but he hasn't necessarily done anything to set himself apart from other QBs that may be on the chopping block.

Look no further than former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who has all but lost the Dolphins' backup battle to former No. 3 overall pick Zach Wilson after Wilson's strong finish to the preseason and just so happens to be former teammates with Dallas rookie Jaydon Blue.

A Quinn Ewers-Jaydon Blue reunion is possible for the Cowboys

It all boils down to the Dolphins' decision. They gave Wilson $6 million in guaranteed money in the offseason to be Tua Tagovailoa's backup and he looked the part in preseason, completing 64.4 percent of his passes for 327 yards and one touchdown to zero interceptions.

Ewers, meanwhile had a nightmarish preseason debut. He bounced back over the final two exhibitions to the tune of completing 18 of 25 passes for 182 yards and two TDs without a turnover. It was a commendable display of resilience from the former Longhorn, but head coach Mike McDaniel seems to be leaning toward naming Wilson the backup.

The Dolphins now have to decide whether to keep three quarterbacks on the roster. Like Dallas, they've been besieged by injuries in the secondary. Beyond that, they have lost veteran running back Alexander Mattison for the season and are without starting RB De'Von Achane. They might not have the luxury to keep Ewers around.

If Ewers gets cut, the Cowboys would need him to clear waivers before offering him a spot on their practice squad. But they would be the perfect destination.

A San Antonio native, Ewers is one of the most prolific quarterbacks in Longhorns history. It stands to reason that he'd be open to returning to the Lone Star State and reuniting with former Texas teammates like Jaydon Blue and DeMarvion Overshown.

It would give Dallas another QB to develop behind Milton. That might be overkill, but let's not discount that he visited with the Cowboys before the 2025 draft and worked extensively with one Mike McCarthy during the pre-draft process.

We still think Grier ends up back in some capacity, but don't think for a second that Jerry Jones won't consider poaching Ewers if he manages to become available to Dallas on the waiver wire.
