The Dallas Cowboys saw DeMarcus Lawrence leave town a year ago during free agency, and in the process, he made a jab at his former team. Lawrence said he had to depart from Dallas because he knew he wouldn't win a Super Bowl there.
While that had to sting for Cowboy fans everywhere, it worked out in his favor, as Lawrence secured a Super Bowl title in his first season with the Seattle Seahawks. And after bringing home a title, he decided to recruit edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr. to join him.
Fowler signed with Seattle on a one-year, $5 million deal. Not only did he head to the reigning champs, but he made it known during his introductory press conference that Lawrence recruited him.
"We talked for like 30 minutes on FaceTime, just chopping it up, and after that I made my decision ... "If you want to win a Super Bowl, you should come here," Fowler said of Lawrence's message.
Ouch.
DeMarcus Lawrence persuaded former Dallas Cowboys DE Dante Fowler Jr. to join Seahawks
While Lawrence played a big role in Fowler's decision, Fowler also crossed paths with Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde while with the Cowboys (2022 and 2023) and Falcons (2020).
Reuniting with Lawrence and Durde seemingly made it an easy decision, but it has to be annoying for Cowboys fans to have a former player throw another jab at the organization. Especially since Lawrence spent 11 years with the Cowboys. While Lawrence has said that Dallas will always be home, it hasn't stopped him from being outspoken about the franchise's shortcomings.
And for Fowler Jr., joining the Seahawks is an ideal outcome, as the Cowboys effectively closed the door on his return. They traded for Rashan Gary before adding Malachi Lawrence and LT Overton in the 2026 NFL Draft. That's without mentioning that Donovan Ezeiruaku is also in the edge room.
There weren't going to be as many snaps available for Fowler Jr, making his exit to Seattle that much easier. Regardless, Lawrence went out of his way to recruit his former teammate, and in the process, he flaunted the success he had with the Seahawks.
With new additions to the defensive line room, there likely won't be room to miss Fowler much anyway, but it doesn't help that Lawrence went out of his way to recruit Fowler and bash Dallas at the same time.
