Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer, defensive coordinator Christian Parker, and vice president of player personnel Will McClay are currently touring Pro Days all around the country.
After evaluating Miami's Pro Day on Monday, the trio caught a flight to Austin for Texas' showcase.
Nothing hits like Dallas drafting a Longhorn, but Miami’s loaded class might be too strong to ignore. Pass rushers Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor, offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa, and cornerback Keionte Scott all make sense as potential targets.
One Miami prospect seemingly nobody had considered to this point is quarterback Carson Beck. However, Ayrton Ostly of USA Today circled the Cowboys as one of Beck's ideal landing spots next month, citing Dak Prescott's injury history and Dallas' high-powered offense.
"Beck’s experienced and knows how to point-and-shoot for an offense with plenty of firepower. The Georgia offense in 2023 had future NFL players Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey in the pass-catching corps.
As he would in Detroit, he’d be a rookie backup with extensive college experience who could handle getting the ball out quickly to talented receivers. Dallas would likely have to change the game plan with him in, though, due to his below-average arm strength following UCL surgery in 2024."
The Dallas Cowboys drafting Miami QB Carson Beck would be a huge mistake
In a vacuum, Ostly made salient points. However, the Cowboys would be an ideal landing spot for any developmental quarterback. Penn State's Drew Allar, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, and North Dakota State's Cole Payton would all benefit from getting drafted by Dallas.
That doesn't make Beck a good fit.
After all, Beck will likely hear his name called late on Day 2 or early on Day 3. The Cowboys only have one pick on Day 2: No. 92 overall in the third round. Whether that pick is used to trade for a veteran linebacker or on the best defensive prospect available, a QB is not on the table.
Drafting Beck in Round 4 (No. 112 overall) would be easier to stomach, but why not target a running back or a linebacker?
Dallas has a three-year window to win a Super Bowl under Prescott's current contract. Drafting his potential successor while the defense is starved for talent at multiple positions would be delusional, even by Jerry Jones' standards.
Not to mention, the Cowboys are still committed to developing Joe Milton, whom they traded for just last offseason. They also signed Sam Howell to a one-year deal in the first week of free agency, locking in their QB room for the 2026 season.
Drafting a quarterback should absolutely be a conversation next year, especially if Milton doesn't make the desired strides in his development. But this year? On Beck? The guy who backed the bus over teammates on more than one occasion at Miami?
Fit be damned. That's a hard pass.
