The Dallas Cowboys have filled the majority of their major needs this offseason, but Jerry Jones still has a few on his checklist he needs to watch out for. Near the top of that list is the running back position, where the Cowboys have little depth at the position behind breakout star Javonte Williams.
For as great as Williams was in the feature back role last season, Dallas could use a guy who can spell him a bit if need be. 2025 fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue didn't show enough in his rookie season to warrant faith in him, and Malik Davis isn't much better, so Jones should look at external options.
Thankfully, the perfect depth running back may be available for the Cowboys: Alvin Kamara, whohas been a no-show during OTAs for the New Orleans Saints, and there's reason to believe the Saints would consider trading Kamara for the right price now that he's no longer a starting-caliber RB.
The Dallas Cowboys can't ignore the Alvin Kamara situation in New Orleans
The five-time Pro Bowler is seemingly on the chopping block in New Orleans after the Saints signed Travis Etienne to a four-year, $52 million deal in free agency. Mickey Loomis has publicly admitted they are still trying to figure out how/where Kamara fits into their long-term plans.
Yes, it's voluntary OTAs, and he historically never shows up at this stage of the offseason, but this doesn't feel like the normal we'll see you later this summer ordeal. The Saints haven't been doing much damage control, so Jones can at least call about adding a player meant to complement Williams.
Kamara will turn 31 this summer and averaged a career-low 3.6 yards per carry in 2025. What made him one of the best backs in the NFL was his pass-catching prowess. And given Williams caught just 35 passes for 137 yards in 2025, bringing in a back who can catch passes out of the backfield would be a big get.
The 2017 third-rounder from Tennessee could just be the RB2 in the Big Easy and mentor younger backs like Etienne and Devin Neal. But given the sort of player they need, Kamara makes the most sense over someone like James Conner or Trey Benson despite his age.
Herein lies the issue: Kamara has consistently voiced his intention to remain in New Orleans, and he hopes to retire a Saint. So this is not to say he will get traded or that he will end up in Dallas, but as the offseason plays out, this is a scenario Jerry Jones and the Cowboys should keep tabs on.
