Someone had to go.

You could have won a good amount of money if you bet on the Dallas Cowboys to sign a quarterback within the first 48 hours of the legal tampering period.

The Cowboys inked former Eagles and Commanders QB Sam Howell to a one-year deal, seemingly to provide competition behind Joe Milton for the backup job. It's actually a really smart move by Dallas, as nobody stood in Milton's way from winning the QB2 role last offseason.

With four quarterbacks in the room, it felt like a corresponding move was coming, and that happened Thursday afternoon with the team releasing fan favorite Will Grier.

The Dallas Cowboys have released quarterback Will Grier

Grier, who turns 31 in April, captured Cowboys fans' hearts with a show-stopping preseason outing three years ago.

Knowing it was his last game with Dallas after the Trey Lance trade, Grier put on a show with Dak Prescott calling plays against the Las Vegas Raiders. He completed over 80 percent of his passes for 305 yards and two touchdowns, and added 53 rushing yards with a score on the ground.

The game served as a tryout for Grier, and he aced it with flying colors.

The former West Virginia star was with the Cowboys for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He then bounced around between the Cincinnati Bengals, Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, and Los Angeles Chargers before Dallas signed him to the practice squad in November, 2024.

It looked like Grier was going to be a Cowboy again in 2026 after signing a reserve/futures contract in January. However, someone had to go after the addition of Howell, and it was never going to be Milton after Dallas traded for him just last offseason.

Grier never appeared in a regular-season game for the Cowboys, spending most of his tenure on the practice squad. He started two games as a rookie with Carolina in 2019 and has been in a reserve role at every stop ever since.

Cowboys fans will be rooting for him to land on his feet.
